Inhale I am the drop...

Knowing we are the drop and also the entire ocean is a reference in yoga to the idea that we are both a human being, with our own experiences, beliefs, and choices, and also a part of everyone and everything. We are human and divine. The divine part of us is connected to the divine part of everyone else.

Breath is the physical inhale and exhale, and also an energy we can't quite describe. Taking deep breaths expands lung capacity, which is why we are able to do physical activities more successfully with proper breath. Breathing also improves our mental state. It is common advice to “take a few deep breaths” when we feel stressed or out of alignment with life. Deep breaths have a direct effect on the nervous system, and we feel calmer, clearer, and more at ease.

When we breathe mindfully, we activate Prana, and increase the energy of spirit within us. So in addition to breathing more fully, and helping our physical body, we awaken the layers of spiritual energy which make us feel more alive, and remind us we are more than a physical body: we are also energy. The simplicity of watching or holding the breath enlivens this energy so we are more able to access the truth of our divinity. Practicing mindful breathing deepens our connection to the part of ourself that is connected to God, the Universe, and all living things. When we understand this connection, we come closer to a sensation of enlightenment, and internal peace.

Additionally, deep breathing clears negativity and rids us of the illusion that we are separate. With breath, we sense that we are part of a bigger whole. Breathing helps us understand that we are the drop, and also the entire ocean. The drop cannot be separate from the ocean, but the ocean is also reliant on each and every drop.

Like everyone, I often feel separate. Our human instinct is to protect ourself at all costs, and this innate desire keeps us feeling separate on many occasions. When I am stressed, worried, or doubting my capacity, I am assuming and reinforcing my separateness. When I take a few deep breaths, and remember that I am one part of a bigger whole, I feel much more connected, and much more held. Instead of living inside my own mind, with my own problems, I start to see the support all around me, in the form of friends, family, and my own inner spirit.

Breathing really works. Inhale, and breathe in the energy of all things; exhale, and become the entire ocean.
